Bio
Ashaki Ali is a self-taught acrylic/mixed media artist and photographer currently residing in Charlotte, NC. She was born in SC in 1981 and began drawing ocean scenes and popular cartoon characters as a very young child.
She is influenced by the black diasporic experience, African traditional spirituality, and life at its core. She is also inspired by the works of artists such as Frida Kahlo, Gordon Parks, Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, as well as writers including Zora Neale Hurston, Toni Morrison, and Walter Mosley.
She had work published in Black Minds Magazine and is currently working on a collection paying homage to the culture of hip hop for its 50th birthday, most recently gifting Large Professor a portrait during one of his shows in Charlotte.
She is currently preparing for a group show in April as well as pieces commemorating 50 years of hip hop. Her work can be viewed on her website- www.artbyashaki as well as on IG @ashakisartspace .
