Gold leaf dust is trapped by the heavily-textured surface to form pockets of shiny gold. Colour on screen varies with different devices and makes it difficult to judge if the colour is what it appears to be. The background of this painting is Porter's Paints 'Linseed', with no other colours added. Sample cards of Porter's Paints are easy to find and would be helpful for judging colour.
