Bio
Wiley Johnson is a 38-year-old self-taught artist from Raleigh, NC who has autism spectrum disorder. He began painting in 2009 because it made him happy and gave him something to do when he was alone. Painting has been a peaceful, therapeutic way for him to spend his time alone, particularly after his only sibling was killed in a motorcycle accident in 2011. Wiley primarily paints acrylic on canvas, abstract style, using bright colors and wide strokes.
2020 was a year of transformation for Wiley from a hobbyist painter to an emerging artist. Wiley has had three solo gallery exhibits- the Gathering Gallery and the Woman’s Club of Raleigh Gallery and Golden Belt Grand Gallery, in Durham. 3 more local solo exhibits are scheduled in 2023 and 2024. He has been featured in 2 person exhibits at the Charlotte Russell Contemporary Gallery, the Upfront Gallery of Artspace, and the Block Gallery in Raleigh. Wiley’s paintings have also been exhibited in a number of juried group exhibits in NC as well as VA, PA, and NYC. He has had paintings and art products sold at the NC Museum of Art Museum Store as well as Raleigh gift shops. His painting, "Burning", won an Honorable Mention at the Floyd Center for the Arts, Floyd, VA., fall of 2021. Wiley is proud to be the first NC artist accepted by ArtLifting which has installed giant reproductions of his paintings in Durham, Wake Forest, and Sutton Square in Raleigh, NC. The North State Journal featured Wiley in an article by Lauren Rose on Feb. 2, 2022, https://nsjonline.com/article/2022/02/nc-artist-spotlight-wiley-johnson/.
