Bio

Teresa Godfrey is a full-time artist and professional member of Visual Artists Ireland. She holds an MA in Documentary Film Practice from the University of Ulster and is an award-winning screenwriter with two dramas broadcast on UK’s Channel 4 television. Her poetry and short stories have been published in literary journals in Ireland, the UK, and in the USA. Her first poetry collection – This, Also, Is Mercy – was published by Summer Palace Press in 2021, and her second – How Will They Name Us? – was published by Revival Press Limerick, 2024. Her debut novel, Wipe Out, was published by Sunbury Press, USA in 2022.
Teresa has continually nurtured her passion for drawing and painting by regularly attending Life Drawing classes and certified Fine Art courses at further education colleges such as The South West Regional College Enniskillen, The Crescent Arts Centre Belfast, and the Strule Arts Centre Omagh. She first began exhibiting her work in 2013 when studying for a HNC in Fine Art at Belfast Metropolitan College. Since then her work has been shown in 28 group exhibitions of which 14 were in the UK, 9 in Ireland, 5 online, and 1in Italy and her art was featured in Collect Art magazine, Vol 52, along with an interview about her practice. She had her first solo show at Solas Art Gallery, Ballinamore, Co Leitrim in April/May 2025. She is currently preparing for a second solo show.
Although Teresa is a professionally trained draughtsman, having begun her working life in engineering and architectural drawing offices, she now paints abstract or semi-abstract works mainly in oils on medium to large scale canvases. In addition, she uses a variety of mark-making instruments to excavate and expose deeper significance within her work to both herself and to her audience. In this sense then, she is an intuitive artist. But her work is neither random or haphazard because she is an artist who is aware of her increasingly purposeful search for meaning in her own life and in her experiences of the world around her. Whilst she leaves herself open, and even vulnerable, to the deep emotions that can arise when exploring the subconscious, she mines these with the acute consideration and sensibility of an artist who wants to reach out and engage with the world in a coherent and stimulating way.
