Slam poetry

At a poetry slam each poet is given 3 minutes to deliver a spoken word piece in any style or subject. At the end of each poets performance they are given a score by 5 judges picked at random from the audience. Highest scorer wins. Its a mock competition but performances can get intense and at its best it's like watching 3 minute pieces of spoken word theatre. I slammed for a London team of 4 poets against teams all over the USA. So much fun.

Here I might have to paint a whole wall as finished painting in 4 to 5 hours, this demands total abandonment into the painting, letting go, working by instinct, fast and confident, knowing each stroke has a permanent place, without hesitation, allowance, acceptance, lack of resistance, which is delight.

I love to draw. I will sit at the table and lose myself unwinding the tangles of thoughts manifesting as line drawings. Sometimes the lines look at me and demand expansion through colour pencil, crayon, pastel, paint. We are ever changing drawings expanding existence by our thoughts demanding momentum, while we sit doodling and looking through the holes in our reasoning.

Riverbank

Riverbank is an example of practice of painting "live" in clubs, festivals, with children. Painting live tends to be lots of spontaneous brushstrokes, painted fast, dark against light, warm against cool, instant effect. More practice of the artists meditation which in my case is to "learn to let go" so that creativity flows from your fingertips at will.

The Majic Forest Gig

This was a back to back, wall to ceiling installation of hardboards, the top ones 6x4ft and the bottom ones 2x4ft. The top boards were mostly painted "live" as performance in nightclubs, festivals and galleries, some with drawings by children, especially the bottom ones which were done at Notting hill Carnival and London Zoo. I take the boards back to the studio to finish them, some go back to who ever paid me to do the gig, some remain as my property to sell later. Some joyous paintings are for sale from this series.

The gardeners design for the back yard

The title is from my comedy blog of "The builders from outer space". Little Don and Big Bill ran surreal building sites and had characters like Big Eric who was not tall, in fact he was only 5ft 6inches but he was 5ft 6inches in all directions. The gardeners had a crop growing in the basement under lights which they'd harvest before a building site party. This is the design that they came up with for the backyard of the property that was being developed by Fat Andrew a dodgy character who could sometimes be seen ducking down behind a car in the street to avoid the gaze of a passing policeman.
