Paul Wright ‘paints’ with reclaimed copper, creating three dimensional canvases informed by an ambiguous and variable process of metamorphosis; pieces which explore the powerful and contradictory world of the seas off the Penwith peninsula, suggesting the interplay of light on a watery surface, and the stories contained within.
The West Cornwall-based artist employs found copper to meticulously craft tactile and intriguing one-of-a-kind pieces. His artistry shapes angular wave forms, each piece undergoing a transformative chemical process, accelerating the metal’s natural oxidation, breathing life into the sculptures, channeling the sea’s graceful yet capricious beauty into each work of art. Variation is key to Paul’s process, as each piece is wildly tactile and unpredictable; the patina of the copper is always the main focus.
