Bio

As a neurodivergent artist, Marie Magnetic uses color, form, and surreal images to make sense of humanity. Pulling from her experiences as a queer, Jewish, and Indigenous woman, she uses social issues and events from the everyday to explore society and share her experiences and inner world with her audience. Other than a handful of community art classes she has taken at community art centers, Marie is self-taught.

Marie Magnetic (b. 1989, Jackson, Michigan) is a Chicago-based visual artist. She was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Central Michigan University in 2017, working in social services and several library roles before returning to art during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, Marie held her first solo exhibit at Little Broken Things in Chicago. Marie is a Foundation House, Haven Foundation, and New York Foundation for the Arts grant recipient. Additionally, her work has been published in Haus-a-Rest, HNDL Mag, and Modern Renaissance Magazine.

After dealing with relentless red tape in the healthcare industry, I was inspired to make this piece. I have ADHD and have been clashing with my health insurance company every month for prescription refills, as they have decided to require prior authorization for this much-needed prescription. My anxiety only gets worse as I try to navigate a world in which neurodivergence is punished and seen as an affliction. The American healthcare industry is an abyss of policies and procedures that helps no one other than the billionaire, owning class.

When American dreams become American nightmares, we can succumb to sleep paralysis or undertake steps to combat our torrential communal trance. Compliance defiance measures loneliness as we are pitted against each other in endless competition. I long for a world where value is not measured by the value one brings to fruition under capitalism.

the hostility, violence, and tyranny of late-stage capitalism seem inescapable. we need the tools of liberation, but also the strength and the willpower. in order to achieve collective freedom, humans must work together. we are not individual entities that coexist- rather, a puzzle of promise longing for completion. humanity is a global family.

Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art. Very often in our art, the art of words.
