Bio

Görkem Can is a Turkish-born abstract visual artist based in Los Angeles. Her work is rooted in a deep curiosity about existence, perception, and the unseen forces that shape human experience. From an early age, she has questioned the nature of time, identity, and the structures, both internal and societal, that influence consciousness. These inquiries continue to guide her artistic practice.
Through abstraction, color, and texture, Görkem translates sensory and emotional experiences into visual form. Painting becomes a way to express what words cannot, exploring emotional and psychological landscapes that often go unseen. Her work reflects stillness as a heightened state of perception, nonlinear time, quiet rhythms, and the subtle forces that shape awareness.
Görkem’s practice combines intuitive abstraction with influences from media, digital design, and creative production. She has exhibited internationally, including solo shows such as Scent Mentor Collection in Los Angeles in 2025 and group exhibitions like Dreams and Nightmares in London in 2026 and Red & White in New York in 2026. She has also created commissioned works for private clients and brands, translating personal narratives into immersive abstract experiences.
Alongside her studio practice, Görkem has contributed to creative direction, set design, and digital visual concepts for fashion campaigns, music projects, and multimedia productions. She holds an MBA from Southern States University, Los Angeles, a Graduate Certificate in Business and Management of Entertainment from UCLA Extension, and a BA in Media and Communication from Izmir University of Economics. She is fluent in Turkish and English, with working knowledge of Spanish.

In my culture, it is traditional to read Turkish coffee cups. After drinking the coffee, the cup is flipped, and the patterns formed by the coffee grounds are believed to hold meanings or reflect the feelings of the person, or even hint at their near future. Since I created this piece primarily using coffee, I hope viewers can see shapes in the artwork and let them resonate with their own emotions or sense of what may come.

Interlinked explores connection, transformation, and the persistence of experience. I began with a large red circle, evoking a womb or something organic, representing the soul. As I built texture around it, the ink naturally flowed beyond its borders, while some edges remained contained. Later, I added a smaller circle, suggesting the soul emerging into a new life. Though the circles are distinct, they intertwine, reflecting how experiences are connected. The painting also represents a person shaped by trauma who creates growth, yet the past remains part of the present. Like an ouroboros, pain and healing coexist, showing that both our challenges and growth define who we have become.
