I am a 3-dimensional abstract artist, born in the beautiful islands of Trinidad and Tobago and grew up in the culturally diverse South Bronx. My mom worked at the Metropolitan Museum Of Art (Met) in NYC for many years. Our family history is woven through the Met starting with my grandfather. To this day, I have family working at the Met.
So, my inspiration dates back to when I was a child running around the museum with my brother while our mother finished work. We were fortunate the Met was our playground. As a child, I was always intrigued by Jackson Pollock's work, so much so that I would sit and study his work for hours at the Met. Unbeknownst to me, the Met made a significant impact which I did not realize until many years later.
Every time I paint and create, it just happens, it isn't easy to explain. To put it into words, something magnificent and amazing materializes and my art comes to life. I see myself as the "MacGyver" of art - where MacGyver would use anything around him to produce creative and unique results to get out of almost anything. I took that idea and applied it to my art. I use anything to create a one-of-a-kind design. My genre of choice is mixed media - where I combine different materials and techniques, stems from all the years I roamed the halls of the Met with my brother, studying all incredible works of art.
Art has been around me for years and one person who had a big impact on me discovering my love of art was my brother/ friend Shirt King Phade. He is a very gifted artist. I had no thought of being an artist, I was pursuing my dreams of being an actor, screenwriter and director. I never knew how much art was a part of me. Until one day in 2012 when I purchased a painting of a tiger from him because I love tigers. Somehow that sparked something in me that awoken my love for art, like that kid running and exploring the Met. I thought to myself - I'm an artist too! I took it home and just stared at it. The next thing I knew I started to paint on it. Now I know what you're thinking but I didn't mess up the painting, I only made it mine. That way during the day, you can see his work and in the night you see my version.
After that, I stopped painting due to extenuating circumstances. In 2015, I started painting then paused, and again in 2016 my creativity exploded. I painted over 100 paintings! I was grateful to host my first show at the amazing Breath of Life in Newburgh, NY. A big thanks to Tony for seeing my gift! After that, I invested over a substantial amount in 2017 to prepare and showcase my work at the Catalyst Gallery in Beacon, NY. It was such a success - people told me they thought it was a museum. People approached me saying, this was amazing, and thank you so much for the experience. I was even blessed enough to donate 100% of the raffle earnings to the Lupus Foundation of America.
Then, from 2017 through 2020, I was fortunate to have my work displayed at the Historical Howland Cultural Center in Beacon, NY. In the summer of 2020, during the height of the pandemic, I was making history in the streets of SOHO, NY. I started painting enormous murals on board-up storefront windows. While it seemed like chaos was tearing apart NYC and the country, I was one of many artists building and spreading a positive message through art. It was my way of spreading LOVE not hate because if we all treated each other with love then George Floyd and many others would probably still be alive. Treat people the way you would like to be treated. Street art is about the lines/characters, expression and flow, the Message, imagination, and creativity and the Journey. So, I took my 3-dimensional abstract art style that began in my home to the gallery and from the gallery to the streets of NYC.
I was also a part of a one-in-a-lifetime street project for the NY Public Library. On November 5th, 2020, I was able to paint a huge Mural on the newly renovated Stavros Niarchos Library, and my work was displayed till the opening of this amazing Library in June 2021. A special thanks to the NY Library president, Anthony Marx, aka Tony, and Stevie Ray Vance for being a special guest curator for this amazing exhibit. I was fortunate to be able to paint on the library boarded-up window front and have my work displayed right on 40th and 5th Ave! My work has been showcased in newspapers, online magazines, and on CNBC. Also, I am thrilled to share my work published in two books. " Mightier Poets for Social Justice", edited by the wonderful Poet Gold (pg. 51), and "Fresh Plywood NYC, Artist Rise Up in the Age of Black Lives Matter" Photography by the legend Kurt Boone. I am honored to share and display my work with you. My vision is to have my work make an impact all over the world and come full circle and have my work exhibited at the place where I fell in love with art. A place where I learned about art, my school, and the place I called my second home to this day, the Metropolitan Museum Of Art in NYC.
