Bio

Self-taught artist and composer. Dirkje was born in 1975, and she completed a B.Sc. Hons Mathematics degree at Stellenbosch University in 1998. After working as an actuarial assistant for two years she decided to go into the arts full time. She now lives in Nieu-Bethesda, Eastern Cape, South Africa where she owns the Infinity Gallery.

In 2023 she started to compose music, initially using the condition called chromesthesia in which sounds invoke images of colour in the mind’s eye. She did a series of paintings where each note was represented by a piece on the canvas, thus each painting being a song.

The process has evolved since then, as she describes: “I just hear the tunes in my head and I have to write it down, so I cannot take any credit for it. I will take criticism though, as I’d like to grow. Chromesthesia acted as a doorway into the world of composition for me. I am very grateful for this process and although I am fully aware that I am still crawling, I am excited to see where it takes me.”
