New collection Searching for the Light: Alone, sitting on the pine forest floor, overlooking the ocean from the mountain slope, listening, smelling, feeling the gentle breeze, watching the bugs. This intrigue created a fascination to create childlike, visual, abstracted conversations.
As the brushstrokes dance across the canvas, alive with ever-evolving emotions, viewers are challenged not just to see, but to move past distractions to uncover their unique qualities that often go unnoticed.
About Wilma:
From an idyllic setting on the slopes of the mountains in the Western Cape, South Africa, Wilma Seston spent most of her young life outdoors, creating, observing and connecting to nature as she climbed trees, talked to bugs and looked out over the sea. For years, her artistic creations were binned and she was denied the privilege to study art at and after school. However, this did not dampen her enthusiasm and determination to be an artist.
She seized every opportunity to create some form of art.
Driven by her passion for aesthetic beauty, she pushed and worked relentlessly until some of her young dreams were realised.
She read books, joined workshops, worked in the framing industry, became a member of art associations and entered competitions.
Soon, she started to exhibit in galleries, markets, art shops & fairs
Initially, she worked in bright watercolours but, as she developed and grew her insights and skills, acrylics and mixed media became her preferred process for making art.
On relocating to the UK in 2006, she found an Island Studio in London to fulfil her lifelong dreams. She creates playful, colourful under-layers, then tells a transparent story over the top to draw intrigue of ‘what lies beneath the surface’. She draws inspiration from hidden details in her surroundings, to tell a story that uplifts, energises and refreshes, while inspiring viewers to ‘stop and smell the roses’.
